Introducing the exquisite Thimble Cactus, known as Mammillaria gracilis 'fragilis' (also referred to as Mammillaria vetula or powder puff cactus), a small, slow-growing cactus native to Central Mexico! Mammillaria is among the most highly prized cacti for its desirable traits and will be visually appealing in your very own container garden.

This captivating little cactus boasts a cylindrical, oval body adorned with a delightful array of interwoven white spines. Belonging to the Cactaceae family, it can grow up to 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide. Growth is gradual, with a few inches of height grown over a year.

Thimble Cactus blooms in the spring and late summer to autumn. These cactus plants have delicate white and creamy yellow flowers.ThisMammillariaplant is considered  faster growing compared to other cacti, and would look great in a variety of settings. According to ASPCA, thimble cactus is not known to be poisonous to humans or pets. Thimble Cactus can be propagated with ease from offsets.

Overall, the Thimble Cactus is a low-maintenance plant that is easy to care for and can add a unique touch to any indoor or alpine trough garden. With the right growing conditions and care, the cactus can thrive and produce beautiful flowers year after year.

Watering Needs

The Mammillaria Gracilis Fragilis is a cactus that requires little water. Keep in mind that cacti can survive for a long time without water because they have developed the ability to store it. You don't need to water the thimble cactus until the soil is completely dried out, even in the summer when it is actively growing. It is important to let the soil dry out completely between waterings to prevent overwatering, which can cause the roots to rot.

In the dormant winter period, this mammillaria should be given a period of rest and watered even less frequently, only when the soil is completely dry. It is important to use a well-draining soil mix and a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom of the pot.

If the Mammillaria cactus is placed in full sun, it may only need to be watered once or twice a week; if it is indoors, it may require even less. Overwatering is the most common cause of death in cacti, so it is important to be cautious when watering the Mammillaria Gracilis Fragilis.

Light Requirements

Providing enough light for these desert cacti is one of the most important aspects of their care. It is important to grow Mammillaria fragilis in areas that receive at least 4-6 hours of bright, direct light every day to keep them happy, but too much can cause sunburn and damage to the thimble cactus.

If indoors, place your thimble cactus directly in front of a west- or south-facing window. If they don't receive enough light, their stems may grow leggy and become paler, and their spines will shorten; so, make your cactus happy and give it plenty of light. During the winter months, the plant should be given a period of rest and moved to a cooler location with less light.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The thimble cactus prefers a well-draining cactus potting soil that is specifically formulated for cacti. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized cactus potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your cactus thrive. It is important to use a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom of the pot. The soil should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings to prevent overwatering, which can cause the roots to rot.

Fertilizer is not necessary for the Mammillaria Gracilis Fragilis, but providing a small amount of fertilizer during the growing season can be beneficial. Natural fertilizer can be applied once a year with an equal ratio of 5-10-5 (NPK). It is important not to over-fertilize, as this can cause damage to the thimble cactus. If the thimble cactus is not growing or appears unhealthy, it may be a sign of over-fertilization or other issues, such as overwatering or inadequate light.

Hardiness Zones & More

The thimble cactus is hardy in USDA hardiness zone 9-11. It prefers warm temperatures between 60-80°F. The cactus can tolerate high temperatures, but it should be protected from frost and freezing temperatures.

The Mammillaria Gracilis Fragilis prefers low humidity and should be kept in a dry environment. High humidity can cause the Mammillaria cactus to rot and develop fungal diseases. It is important to provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent moisture from accumulating on the leaves and stems.

Great buy
This pee pad tray holder is a game-changer for indoor puppy training. The silicone construction with four fixed points keeps pads secure and prevents shifting, so my puppy stays on the pad instead of having accidents on exposed floor areas. The 23x23 inch size accommodates standard pads perfectly, and the raised edges contain liquids effectively, protecting my flooring from stains and damage while making cleanup quick and easy with just a wipe-down. The stable grip ensures the tray stays in place even with active puppy movement, and the design is sleek enough to fit unobtrusively in my home without looking like obvious pet equipment. For the price, this is a practical investment in housebreaking success. The tray has significantly reduced messes on my floors, made training more consistent by containing accidents to one designated spot, and saved me from extensive floor damage that would have cost far more than this simple solution.

Finally a ball my power chewers cannot destroy
Size: Medium
I have two dogs, an American Bully and an American Pit Bull Terrier, and both of them love to chew. Most balls last a very short time around here before they are shredded or missing big chunks. This one has actually held up. They chase it, tug on it and sit and chew on it, and it is still in one piece with no pieces breaking off. One of my favorite things is being able to put food inside. I add some kibble or small snacks, and they will happily sit and work on it for a long time. It keeps them busy, gives them something safe to chew, and they get a little reward while they play. When they are done, I just rinse it out and it is ready to go again. If you have strong jawed dogs that usually destroy toys, this ball is worth trying. Mine really enjoy it and I feel better knowing they finally have a ball that can keep up with them.

My dog LOVES this ball
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
Does your dog destroy tennis balls in seconds? Yes? Then your dog NEEDS this ball! It's squishy like a tennis ball, fits in ball launchers (even the cheap ones) and bounces when it hits the ground. My dog has been literally playing with this ball all day and not a single mark on it! The only bad thing is that it does not float. Definitely worth the money! Put it in your cart!

Perfect for ball demolishers
Size: Medium
The dogs love the chuck it brand. I don’t know what it’s made of but they go crazy over them. Will not play with another ball. Wonder if it’s “laced” with an addictive scent. Have pits. Very durable. Not able to chew to pieces. Last for about 6 months before there is a small break. I keep a back up because when the ball goes missing the house is in chaos. 😆 🤪
