In 2008, while assisting in one of the Montessori schools in Indiana, the children asked me why I looked the way I look (brown). Most of them had never seen a brown person so close, leave alone touching one. I felt the children were genuine and wanted to learn more about me. I approached ÒDiversityÓ which I thought was the underlying topic, from a soft ground. I talked about the different flowers, trees, animals...and finally people. I explained how each contributed to the beauty of the earth. As I continued to search for ways to extend the lesson about diversity, the song ÒWe Are the PeopleÓ came to my head and I taught it to the children. It was a thriller. Unlike my first class, I have written this short play imagining a class full of diversity, but still with a need for a methodology from a soft ground in order to carry out a conversation about diversity in this time and era.
