Regarded as the father of the short story as well as the first modern fiction writer, Anton Chekhov rejected conventional forms to examine the lives of ordinary people in prosaic situations. His impressionistic depictions of Russian life and the human condition resound with emotional honesty, focusing on character rather than plot and revealing subtle but important truths. Thomas Mann held Chekhov in highest esteem, declaring, His short stories rank with all that is greatest and best of European literature. This compilation of seven tales attests to the timeless appeal of the Russian author's short fiction.Selections include Misery, an account of a sleigh-driver's attempts to communicate his overwhelming grief; A Father, a meditation on the conflict between rejecting a monstrous parent and giving him his respectful due; A Problem, which proposes that criminals cannot reform unless they pay for their misdeeds; and In Exile, an examination of whether it is better to dream of happiness or to accept a living hell. Other tales include Ward No. 6, relating a conflict between an asylum inmate and the institution's director; My Life: The Story of a Provincial, in which a rebellious young bourgeois joins the working classes; and Peasants, an expos of the dehumanizing effects of poverty.

A primal book on being a Leader and Being a Servant
Format: Kindle
I believe I would spend much hours, and perusing Greenleaf, its so simple and
easy to grasp, yet profound and worthy of reflexion, action and again meditation
one would find that Hesse's "Journey to the East" will projetc the light of another
protagonist, then Journey itself, because its the Journey that brought the new
enligment, the growth and change, everything that happens in it is relevant,
indispensable and necessary, therefore it behooves us to read Greenleaf's
Servant as Leader, many times over while we ourselves take this
Servant Leadership Journey, with its help maybe we will discover a
a new and magnificent way to better ourselves, and help others
grow, develop their potential and become themselves Servant
Leaders, there is a great need in todays world for this type of
mindset, have you started your journey?? Grab this book,
and follow along, you certainly will not regret i!

No other way
Format: Kindle
I found “servant-leadership” as the best way to lead by the simple fact that, despite or even in spite of being counter intuitive and a paradox in itself, it is what Jesus showed us as “the way” - Do you want to lead? Be the last. That’s leading.

simple yet profound
Format: Kindle
The principles presented in this book are quite basic; serving others creates a motivation for them. Yet there is a difficulty in the personal challenges of servant-leadership to remain humble enough to know yourself and understand the concept of putting the highest good above one's own agenda. I enjoyed the examples of leaders who seemingly gave of themselves for the good of a bigger community. They understood their part of the greater good.

Timeless
Format: Kindle
Reading this book applies as much today as the day it was written. Greenleaf reminds us how to get back to the basics of leading well. It's simple; you have to care for those you lead. True leadership is touchy and feely--it's empathic. Through empathy, a leader learns she must serve her followers if she is going to lead them well. A must read!
