What is Dermol?

Dermol comes in different forms: a lotion known as Dermol 500 lotion, a cream, and a wash. Both the cream and lotion work well as antimicrobial and emollient treatments, meaning they help to kill germs while keeping your skin soft and hydrated. You have two options for using them: you can apply them directly to your skin and leave them on, or use them as a substitute for your usual soap.

Dermol wash acts as a soap alternative that moisturises your skin and has antimicrobial benefits. It's made to take the place of regular soaps and cleansers, which can sometimes make dry skin worse. Similar to the cream and lotion, you can also use Dermol wash as a leave-on treatment, applying it again after you've washed and dried your skin.

What is Dermol used for?

All three Dermol products work well in treating and preventing dry, itchy skin conditions such as atopic, discoid, and dyshidrotic eczema. Although these conditions are chronic, meaning they last a long time, they can be managed effectively.

Atopic eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, makes your skin itchy and dry. This dryness can lead to cracked, inflamed, and sore skin. You might notice dry patches anywhere on your body, but they usually show up on your hands, the insides of your elbows, the backs of your knees, face, and scalp. It's often triggered by allergens, which is why it's called 'atopic'. Common triggers include soap, cold and dry weather, pollen, and pet fur.

Discoid eczema, also called discoid dermatitis or nummular eczema, is a skin condition that leads to distinct oval or coin-shaped patches on the skin. These patches can be extremely itchy and might ooze a clear fluid or become dry and crusty. Nummular eczema often appears after skin injuries such as burns or insect bites, although there can be other causes as well.

Dyshidrotic eczema, also known as pompholyx, leads to itchy, fluid-filled blisters on your fingers and palms, or on your toes and the soles of your feet. These blisters can sometimes ooze and typically clear up in two to three weeks. Once the blisters are gone, your skin might become dry and cracked, and you could experience some pain.

How does Dermol work?

Dermol 500 lotion, cream, and wash all have the same two types of active ingredients:

These are antiseptics that work against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

When the areas of your skin affected by eczema begin to ooze and itch, there's a greater chance of infection, particularly if you scratch them. Sometimes, a skin infection can even cause a flare-up. If you see a yellowish crust on the spots, notice a lot of oozing, or if the skin feels hot or painful, it's likely infected. The most common bacteria that can worsen eczema and increase itching is Staphylococcus aureus.

The two antiseptics work to eliminate germs on your skin that can make your eczema worse. They also help stop secondary infections that might occur if you scratch your itchy skin.

These act as emollients to soften your skin, keep it well-hydrated, and protect it by sealing in moisture and restoring its natural barrier. They also help prevent your skin from drying out and getting irritated, which can happen when using regular cleansing products like soaps, foaming agents, and fragrances during bathing and washing.

What forms of Dermol are there?

Dermol is available in different forms: cream, 500 lotion, wash cutaneous emulsion, 600 bath emollient, and 200 shower emollient. Each of these products contains the same four active ingredients, except for the Dermol 600 bath emollient, which includes three of them: benzalkonium chloride, isopropyl myristate, and liquid paraffin.

If you have discoid eczema, you're likely to be prescribed Dermol 500 as a lotion, cream, or wash.

How long does Dermol take to work for eczema?

Dermol works quickly to relieve dry, itchy skin because its active ingredients are rapidly absorbed. However, it's crucial to continue using the treatment for the entire period your clinician has advised, even if your skin starts to improve. Stopping early might cause your eczema to return, usually in the same spot.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Dermol?

No need to worry if you miss applying it once in a while. Just apply it again when it's time for your next dose.

If the lotion, cream, or wash gets into your eyes and causes irritation, rinse your eyes thoroughly with plenty of water. Be cautious not to let the product run into your other eye while rinsing. If the irritation persists, it's best to consult your GP.

If you accidentally swallow Dermol and start feeling unwell, get medical help straight away.

Can I use Dermol 500 on my face?

You can apply Dermol 500 lotion to your face, but be careful and try to avoid getting it in your eyes. If this accidentally happens, rinse them with water as soon as possible and if irritation continues, seek immediate medical help.

Can you buy Dermol over the counter?

Whether you’re using Dermol cream, lotion or wash, they’re all pharmacy medications, meaning you don’t need a prescription, but you still need to talk to a pharmacist before buying them. That’s just so that they can make sure that Dermol is right and safe for you to use.

Does Dermol contain steroids?

No. Dermol 500 lotion, cream and wash contain four active ingredients: liquid paraffin, isopropyl myristate, benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine hydrochloride. None of these are corticosteroids (or simply steroids), but rather work in different ways to soothe and hydrate your skin and protect it from infections.

Liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate are emollients that work to moisturise your skin. On the other hand, benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine hydrochloride have antiseptic properties that help eliminate surface bacteria on your skin, which could otherwise lead to infections and worsen dry skin conditions like eczema.

Can you get any side effects while taking Dermol for eczema?

Dermol lotion, cream, and wash are all specifically made for dry or troublesome skin anywhere on your body. While it's very rare, they can sometimes cause redness, irritation or itching on the treated areas, especially if you use it in folded skin areas like your groin.

If you experience any of these adverse reactions, stop using Dermol and seek immediate medical help:

These could all be signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Are there any alternatives to Dermol for eczema?

Yes, but keep in mind that eczema doesn't have a guaranteed cure, and it can come back at any time. Don’t worry though, there are various treatments available to manage its symptoms.

First, there are other emollients like Dermol designed to protect, soften, and hydrate your skin. They can be used regularly and are available in various forms like creams, ointments or lotions. Some common emollients for discoid eczema include Doublebase Gel, Balneum Plus Cream, Cetraben Moisturising Cream.

Topical corticosteroids are also effective for managing inflammation associated with skin conditions like eczema. They’re usually only available on prescription, come in different strengths and can be used during flare-ups. Some examples of topical corticosteroids include Eumovate, Hydrocortisone 1%, and Betnovate.

If corticosteroids haven't worked for you or caused problems, in some cases you can also consider Protopic. It uses tacrolimus to target the immune cells that cause inflammation. Protopic is great for long-term use, especially on sensitive skin, and doesn't cause skin thinning (a possible side effect of topical corticosteroids). Plus, it helps prevent future flare-ups.

If your skin becomes infected, your clinician may recommend antibiotics. Some topical corticosteroids combined with antibiotics can also be used for severe cases of discoid eczema. Examples include Fucibet cream (betamethasone and fusidic acid) and Fucidin H cream (hydrocortisone and fusidic acid).

Pretty hard to clean
Color: Cinamutt Roll - Large, Size: Large
We've had this for about a week now. I have 2 dogs, one small one about 55lb. I bought this for my big girl, but lil man is determined to get the best of this toy. Usually they don't both go after the same toys, so this is interesting. The trouble is, neither one of them can get all the treats out if something makes it all the way down into the crevice. It's surprisingly deep. The up side is that they'll try for quite a while before giving up. The down side is even if you put it in the top rack of the dishwasher, something stuck deep in there isn't going anywhere until you dig it out yourself. I tried a plastic knife but it broke the second time I used it in there. I wound up using the metal handle of a reusable straw cleaner. Which then I had to wash that, too. Then it needs to dry overnight before it can be used again. All in all, the dogs like it fine, it's gross to scrape out and wash, takes longer than most toys to dry, and I have the feeling that will eventually cause me to pass it to someone else's dog long before my two have gotten tired of it. At this point I'm pulling out of the toy rotation for a week or two because I'm not ready to clean it a third time.

Hyena Proof
Color: Acorn - Large, Size: Large
I have an American Bulldog that would chew a brick if he didn’t have an alternative lying around. They won’t last forever (nothing does) but we’ve had two of these over the course of a year and for him that is nothing short of a miracle. And that is daily chewing like it’s his job. I highly recommend the Acornucopia for aggressive chewers with jaws like hyenas…so it’s probably great for your dog too.
